डायरेक्टर-प्रोड्यूसर महेश भट्ट की फिल्में ही नहीं, बल्कि उनकी रियल लाइफ भी काफी बोल्ड रही है। यूं तो उनकी जिंदगी से कई विवाद जुड़े, लेकिन बेटी पूजा भट्ट के साथ एक मैगजीन के लिए कराया गया उनका फोटोशूट सबसे ज्यादा सुर्खियों में रहा था। सालों पहले एक मैगजीन के लिए उन्होंने बेटी पूजा भट्ट के साथ लिपलॉक सीन दिया था। ये फोटोशूट मैगजीन के कवर पेज पर छपा था, जिसमें पूजा अपने पापा को ही स्मूच करती दिखी थीं। इस फोटो ने इतना विवाद खड़ा किया था कि पूजा और महेश दोनों ने ही इस फोटो को फेक बताया था।

महेश भट्ट के पिता का नाम नानाभाई भट्ट और मां का नाम शिरीन मोहम्मद अली है। कहा जाता है कि भट्ट के माता-पिता ने शादी नहीं की थी और इसका असर महेश भट्ट की जिंदगी पर भी दिखा।

उन्होंने अपने फिल्मी करियर की शुरुआत निर्देशक राज खोसला के साथ बतौर सहायक निर्देशक के की थी। महेश ने पहली बार 1970 में आई फिल्म संकट का निर्देशन किया था। शुरुआती असफलताओं के बाद 1979 में आई फिल्म लहू के दो रंग से उनको सफलता मिली। इसके बाद उन्होंने कभी पीछे मुड़कर नहीं देखा।

महेश भट्ट की पर्सनल लाइफ भी खूब चर्चा में रही। 1970 में उन्होंने किरण भट्ट से शादी की, जिससे उनके दो बच्चे पूजा और राहुल भट्ट हैं। लेकिन परवीन बॉबी से अफेयर के चलते उन्होंने किरण को छोड़ दिया था। इसके बाद महेश ने सोनी राजदान से दूसरी शादी की। आलिया भट्ट, महेश और सोनी की बेटी हैं।
